Say What?

Not long after the loss of this beautiful and iconic 3,400 – 3,600 yr old cypress tree, The
Senator
, this news came across my way… there are proposed plans to run cattle ops through an already-impaired Silver Springs waters here in Florida.  I am left truly speechless; as we mourn the loss of one accidental natural monument loss, but consider legally running amok of another??  Something just doesn’t seem right about this, and it makes my heart sink a bit for Florida’s natural beauty.  The image to the right was taken by a friend of my brother’s, who works in the field.

I grew up frequenting Blue Spring with my family, and I couldn’t imagine something like that be taken away..  It’s very strange to think that if (just IF) we were re-evaluate our diets and what we ought to be eating instead of all the beef we currently consume, we could not only be healthier as individuals, but issues such as this one with Silver Spring may not even become a blip on the governor’s radar to have to deliberate..  I may be completely off base, and we may really need to do this for some reason or another (far beyond me), but to destroy natural habitats that we normally strive to save simply doesn’t compute in my mind.. guess I’ll try using one of my many various calculators..

From Silver to brown, I hope it doesn’t go down.

Beau on CNN Health: The Power of Perceptions

Simply amazing

i want to be a part of this.

Graze on this..

Recently watched almost all of Food, Inc., and well….  they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here’s the one that stood out to me:

The demand for beef has become so high that in order to fill this ever-increasingly tall order, the manufacturing plants (the places where the cows go to get “chopped up” for lack of a better way to express it) find it increasingly difficult to keep diseased meat from spreading; the workers come in contact with so much meat that if one bit is diseased, it easily gets spread.  Their solution?  We’ll just run it through an ammonia-cycle and ta-da!  “Clean meat.”  No joke, this stuff undergoes somewhat of a wash cycle (looks like a laundry machine, kid you not), and then gets pressed into patties such as the one above.. boxed, shipped.. feeling chunks rising).

(With the disclaimer that I’m not 100% sure on what they  feed their cattle, these interesting couple of aerial pics)  As the demand for beef increases and suppliers attempt to fill the orders, more and more cattle are now being fed strictly grain diets – which as we all know is not what their main diet is supposed to consist of (for healthy cattle, anyways)!  On visiting this particular ranch in California, I noticed that their cattle were “grazing” in all-brown surroundings.  A Google map image shows something interesting: the same brown “fields.”  Where is the grass in all this?……….

Here’s the first image I grabbed, just to give an idea:

This second shows the span that this cattle farm covers (zoomed out, circled in yellow).  In case there is any confusion, I labeled the colors…

Again, maybe this particular farm does feed their cattle greens however, their fields look quite a bit different than the green pastures I was used to seeing cattle grazing in in Germany.  It’s just a bit more realistic to me now that I’ve seen this documentary & aerial image.  I liked their steaks.  Worth investigating.

Anyways, there were some other disturbing images, but this to me was the most.  To eat something that has been treated with ammonia, to actually crave it (b/c let’s face it, I would crave a Big Mac or cheeseburger once in a while) makes me now want to upchuck that treated chuck!  Gross.   This is not including any other form of meat, this is simply beef.  The documentary covers much more!

Makes me then also think of all the other things I shouldn’t eat..  that’ll be another day tho..  my burger cravings have since come to a screeching halt – and believe me if I had a child, I would do as my mother did and never allow me to eat there  (Thank you to both of my parents for always, Nutella aside! giving us healthy foods to grow up on).  Thank you, Food, Inc., for explaining to me (and showing me) exactly what “processed” means.

Highly recommend this documentary, if you are interested in quality food and how you can help yourself be just a tad healthier.

Watch the trailer, if you dare (watch the movie if you care):

What’s wrong with this picture?

Over the last year, my dad has been seeing a few women..

..at the dentist’s office!  He’s had extensive work done including extractions, bridgework, root canals and crowns.  The lower row of his front teeth all needed crowns, while the extractions came from the back, top and bottom.  This dentist (not going to spread her name… she doesn’t deserve any possible notoriety) practices under the label (bc yes, it is just a label) of “Cosmetic Dentist” – it’s in the name of her practice, though not through much further investigating, the ADA recognizes her only as “General Practice.”

I was called in to supervise a few of his sessions on the work they were doing on him, after he complained about pain caused by a Valplast partial.  I went bloodhounding.  When I saw the partial they had molded for him (and also expected him to put in his mouth, wear and chew w/), I was literally horrified. I actually don’t even know if all of this work was necessary… *sigh, with an exclamation!

With due respect to the product, I was more horrified (and possibly, maybe, yes a bit outraged) that the dentist would let him walk out with something that had visibly super sharp edges which ended up cutting his gums as he simply followed their instructions on use.  Not mentioning the way the dentist jerked and jolted his jaw while in the chair trying to adjust, readjust, fit, re-fit this contraption.  : (

No bueno.

When I went in with him, I had to ask her how she could let a senior citizen walk out of her office with a product like that, and if she was proud of the work.  Maybe she was under the impression that since others do not hold her accountable, she shouldn’t have to care?  She didn’t know I was coming.

My dad is a pretty hardcore, pain-toleratin’ kind of guy, but that was over the top even for him.  Not only are we now dealing between the dentist and the insurance company, but he is still unable to bite or chew properly, and has to have the work re-done by someone who knows what they are doing.

Simple point(s) being:
1) Beware of a dentist working as a “cosmetic dentist” – it sounds good, looks pretty, but it is not an official field of dentistry recognized by the ADA!  (furthermore, take into consideration the fact that if the dentist is good, they will not need to include “Cosmetic” in their title) –perhaps the cosmetic part comes in by her office offering Botox.  Guess you may as well add in a facial filler treatment to a cavity fill?  Wiki-it :

2) Valplast Flexible Partials – I consulted my dentist of over 10 yrs about it, and they do work for some people.  My dad did not have ample support for these to be attached and to use as a means of actual teeth (to bite, chew), and thus they ended up shifting and chaffing and ultimately cutting his gums.  If multiple posterior (back) teeth are missing, implants must be put into place as supports for this flexible bridge to be effective!  They can also require quite an extensive adjustment time to get them fitting comfortably.

3) Know your HIPAA – if you want to leave a provider, or simply want to request your records in order to get a 2nd opinion, they have no right to question you on why you want your file and/or if you are leaving them (this also happened w/ this particular dentist when I suggested they get a 2nd opinion).

Since he is retired, time wasn’t a huge factor but he spent a lot of it, as well as the pain he endured getting these things adjusted, and we ended up simply giving them back.  I clearly saw his need for implants even as they were attempting to fit this crown –and I’ve spent 0 years in dental school.  Yes, implants are expensive.  Though the pain, money, time and effort put into this bridge as well as the crowns could have been saved by simply doing an implant.

Again, I ask: WHO o who takes care of older people if they have no one standing up for them??  Karma is one thing, but when it comes to the person on the shorter end of that stick, someone’s got to be there for them, especially if it’s one of my parents, and especially if it concerns their health and well-being.  I love my parents and will do what I can to stand up for them and help them in any way, I only wish everyone had someone looking out for them in order to avoid situations such as this.

I urge anyone to do research before they go to any healthcare provider to find out more about them.  Also look into any medications, products, services that are potentially suggested! — “Google it” at least to see what you find –it now takes about .2 of a millisecond to do it.  Currently and unfortunately there isn’t really a reputable service for this state full of retirees and older crowd to find an established and trusted healthcare provider — again, Mr. President… healthcare…?  Somehow we’ve managed to get along how we have been, but at this point in time it seems unacceptable that we cannot do better than simply “getting along.”  We can find more information on where to go/eat/sleep/learn/play/_____ , yet the entire healthcare provider-sphere remains a giant mass of unknown “stuff.”

It’s clear that we could all use a little help.

Rx$

There truly is something wrong with this system when the price for this prescription ranges from $0 up to $33.99 –without insurance.

Recently went to the dermatologist and received a prescription for a general antibiotic.  Currently without health insurance, you can guess I was a tad apprehensive about finding out just how much this would cost to fill.
My first call?  Walgreens.  $26, though they have a discount card available (which you must pay $20 for), that would save me -in the long run, about $12 per refill (3 needed).  Hm.
Next call, Wal-Mart: $10.  Ok, we’re getting better.
CVS? a whopping $33.99!  (though I should say they also offer a discount card… yay.)
And the final call went to our local (and somewhat hoity) grocery chain, Publix..  my savior: $0.

Thankfully, Publix provides antibiotics at no charge – wow, and thank you.  As I just found out, they also provide generic antibiotics for teachers as well.  Of course it begs the question “how can they do this, when others can’t?” (or maybe they simply won’t?), granted the price of their groceries probably covers that, but that’s beside the point ; )  Their one condition?  I have to go back every 2 weeks for a refill.. still less cost than any other option, and given I ride my bicycle, it falls into a double benefit as part of a fun workout.  *Oh Darn.

If I think outside of my 30-yr old self, and think more like someone who is over 80 and needs prescriptions (perhaps more than just one general antibiotic), am I supposed to call each place for the best price?  If I’m 85 and not on the internet, I would have to go to a phone book (if those still exist!), look up the numbers in the tiniest font possibly typed, call hopefully what is the pharmacy number (yea, Wal-Mart couldn’t xfr me, they actually gave me a separate # to call) then wait on hold, hope I can pronounce the name of the medication correctly, and finally get a price.  Oh wait, the other option would be to drive to each place.  Seriously?  It’s fine for me of my somewhat already limited able-mind to get to the comp or phone to look this stuff up, but for someone older, it’s no wonder they get taken advantage of when it comes to (the most important?!?) things like healthcare – simple as filling a prescription.  @#$%!  Outrageous.

Furthermore when I consider that my Rx has 3 refills, that would cost over $100 total — which again, is still fine for me who is able to work..  but for an elderly person on a fixed income… that’s not nothing.

Who oh who helps those in need when there is simply no one else to help with these “little” things?  Who educates us on this?  Um, Mr. President…..*?*  …. The Healthcare “system” is as absent as Bueller was.. and is still enjoying it’s day off.

(Oh, and as the above Rx bottle indicates, I have apparently changed my name to “Breatrix” — usually it’s my last name that gets put on the block!)

Facebook Lifeline.. is it ‘Nuts?

It’s almost as though the world now revolves to some extent around this crazy thing; and as simply as Charlie Brown put it (far before he was a gleam in Peppermint Patty’s eye) :

“Good Grief.”

Well put, Charlie.

**This post is meant to share the link at the bottom – if you don’t end up reading the following and you use Fb, then at least skip down and click the link for some useful tips on keeping your privacy levels moderated 😉

Everyone from employers, significant others, teachers, stalkers, snoopy-mc-snoop-ersons, hackers, to probably even God at this point, look someone up to view their Facebook profile.  Really?  In this day and age where personal life meets social life meets the real world, I suppose it’s simply the direction things are turning..  and hopefully you (yes, YOU) a) have nothing to hide and/or fear, b) take your security into your hands by educating yourself as best as “they” allow you to (“they” being Mr. Zuckerburg and the many sponsors he has – now extending to commercialization), or c) do a bit of both.

Well, apparently here’s to going public!  Ms. Sarah Jacobsson Purewal of PC World took the liberty (and more importantly, time.  -Thank you!!) to help us out with the new Timeline layout of good ‘ol Fb.  Obviously it is now becoming (even) more of a marketing tool than social tool for people to “simply stay in touch” – they are now forcing (who’s forcing anyone?) users to convert to a blog-style layout to better track their lives.  SCARY?

I think so.  If I wanted something to track my every move, I would opt in for an anklet tracking device like someone on probation.  I much rather prefer a WordPress blog where I choose the content which I share.  But then again, if I didn’t want my life publicized to some certain extent, I would swear off the internet altogether..

(and yet again, I have a smartphone.. so I would then also have to revert to a rotary dial – which, may as well be as obsolete as the stone & chisel).  We cannot be upset with the push-and-pull that allowed Fb to be what it is, and to grow the way it has; someone has to pay for  “free” service, so we cannot be condemning the other side of Fb –the commercial side that allows it to actually exist in the way that it does: freely.  I only condemn the method of implementation lol!

Maybe it takes the younger generation to keep up with the “updates” that are being pushed, maybe my age is catching up to me (o boy..lol!), or maybe their engineers could take into a little more consideration their hardcore, diehard, established users who helped start the darn thing, not capitalize off us/them!  Cigarette companies come to mind.  ew.  Then again *sigh, the world revolves around money, so what do we expect.  Not to sound cynical, as my major at UCF is in fact Accounting, but gosh darnit (kept it clean).

There are many who are highly criticizing the new Timeline layout of Fb…  and though I’m truly not a huge fan of it myself (it will now become more maintenance.. like cleaning, laundry, dishes, etc –ugh!), my main reason for not “clicking the ‘Like’ button” of it is that it is simply not as easy to navigate.  It confuses the sh*t out of me – and just as I thought I had my parents taught on how to use Fb (to stay in better touch with family overseas – yay!!), they will now be changing it.  Completely.

Incidentally, while my steed was getting new shoes, I ended up sitting next to a man who had brought with him his glasses and a Sukodu puzzle book; no iPhone, no iPad, no gadgets or gizmos (as I texted my brother, checked the weather, played some WWF, and did some mobile banking), and who was perhaps one of the most insightful, intelligent, down-to-earth people I have met in a long time.  Opening my school folder with every intent to learn more about finance, I didn’t get to opening my textbook before discovering that this very quiet, humble, and peaceful person had worked for the NYSE for the majority of his life (aside from having the privilege of accompanying his wife on business trips, as she was a UN consultant –cool!).

It may be wrong, it may be bad, but I did record some of the things he was saying, simply because they were so …. what’s the word… inspiring, honest, insightful…  still not the word.  We had some of the best conversation I’ve had with someone in a long time, with no interruptions from pings, calls, bleeps and bloops of technology, after which he promptly paid for the service, and drove off in his sparkly Mercedes.  I’m gonna attempt to share the words in some way shape or form.. later.

Anyhow, whoops, huge tangent from where I was going, but most all relevant lol!  Point being, there is no use in being “pissed” or angry at the upkeep we will need to do in order to protect what we want private.  The easiest way to do this is to simply be an upstanding individual in life.  Period.   That way, when things are brought to light by your friends or by some crazy social media medium, you won’t need to worry about who sees what and how that may or may not potentially reflect badly on yourself (psssst, it’s called “accountability for your actions”.. or personal integrity…).  uh, DUH.  You definitely reserve the right to hold private what you want to hold private, you simply have to secure your own right for your life not to be a pigpen.

All THAT said *phew,* here is the article I meant to share paragraphs ago, in order to help you protect your content and security when the new Timeline layout becomes “mandatory:”

**And no, this was not meant to actually include all of the Peanuts characters… in fact I’m not the biggest fan of Peanuts at all… but somehow it just fit together.

Weeki-Wa!

A spontaneous, adventurous day with a very talented photographer, Marcus Adkins; started out at Wekiwa Springs Park, headed downtown for some lunch at Viet Garden, then ended the day running into a well-known O-town graffiti artist at work, Dolla Short.. got pics of all but lunch (was too hungry to snap a shot of it b4 it was long gone! ps- their beef pho is amazing…. Among the best I’ve had from here to ‘frisco.. and I don’t mess around when it comes to the pho)
